How to Put on Your Own Art Show

Art show and exhibit

Putting on your own art show can be an opportunity to showcase your creativity and talent, but it can be tough to put together on your own. Here are four steps to make sure that your art show is one of the best events of the season:

1-Create a Theme

A theme will provide focus for the entire show, saving you time and allowing you to trim unnecessary items. To find a theme, look at the pieces you’d like to sell or exhibit at the show and come up with a list of 10 adjectives to describe them. Ask a few friends to do the same. Sooner or later, a theme will emerge. Keep the theme in mind when decorating and designing promotional materials to provide a consistent look and feel, as well as to keep the singular impact of one unifying message.

2-Find A Good Location and Get It Ready

This will be as easy or as difficult as you make it. You can have an outdoor art show in your backyard, or you can call galleries or community centers to find out if they have space available. Other places to consider are libraries, banks, and schools. If you have trouble locating free locations for your work, you may be able to offer a percentage of any sales in return for the space, rather than paying a hefty up-front cost.

Decorating the space can be left until the night before the show, or the day of the show if necessary–but that doesn’t mean you don’t think about it until then! Decorating will create the right ambiance and feel for your show. Keeping with the theme of your show and the limitations of the space, come up with simple decorations that highlight your artwork. Get friends to help with flowers and other decorating ideas. Don’t forget to include music as well; the right music can often set the perfect mood.

Consider refreshments. If you don’t want to buy a lot of food and drinks, consider having a “special showing” to a select few, who will dine on wine, fruit, or whatever light fare you’d like to serve.

3-Publicize The Show

Design invitations, keeping with the theme of the show, and create a list of those you’d like to invite. Make sure to give guest enough time to RSVP. You may also print a few extra invitations to have on hand when you run into people you’d like to extend an offer to.

Send a press release to local papers. If you don’t know who to contact, call the newspaper and the operator will help you. Use social media to let your friends and their friends know about your art show, and remember to ask church offices to put a mention of your show in the newsletter.

Create posters and hang them at supermarkets and other places that potential buyers and viewers will see them.

4-Have Fun!

It can be a lot of work to put an art show together, but the most important thing to remember is your art. On the day of the show, relax and give yourself enough time to get ready in a relaxed way. Remember what your goal is with the show, and remember why you are having it. Smile and greet your guests and have a ball!

I think sending out the press release to the right publications is crucial! My friends daughter had her work on display before at out city hall. I hope she continues with her art and does her own show one day. Thanks for the pointers.
