One of the essential parts of being a photographer is to know the basic SEO for your artworks if you decide to publish them online. Social Media Networks, photo sharing sites and video sites are becoming a medium for artwork and media promotions. Putting your blogs URL in your photo or videos along with your copyright will not work on search engines as a basis for indexing. I know a lot of photographers missed the concept on how SEO works on images and videos. Recently, I’ve been invited for a seminar about SEO and one of the major topics is on how to promote your artworks via Search Engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. In order for you to showcase your artwork and gain popularity over the web, you must let those engines know about your work right? So how would you do that? This would not take an hour for you to do and this is a good way to let your targeted audience know about you, your brand and how you work. Sounds complicated but it’s not.

Here are some simple tips on how to do SEO on your images and videos.

1. Let your brand be the filename – After you took the shoot and processed it in Lightroom or in photoshop or other photo editing software, you have the capability to change the filename when you save it. Let your brand be the filename. For example, your brand is “Excellent Capture Photography”, you can make it as the filename by simply naming your images like “excellent-capture-photography.jpg. If you have multiple images just put in numbers or letters after the last word and it becomes excellent-capture-photography1.jpg, excellent-capture-photography2.jpg, excellent-capture-photography3.jpg and so on.

2. Put in the style you use – It is very important that your filename is SEO friendly and contains the tag or common words that search engines look up to. These are search terms on which you will key in when you are searching. The best example of this is when you are searching for a portrait image or a landscape image. You can put it in addition with your brand. So your image’s filenames will be like this “excellent-capture-photography-portrait.jpg, excellent-capture-photography-ladscape.jpg, excellent-capture-photography-wedding.jpg, and again put number is the last part of the file name if you have multiple images. It now becomes “excellent-capture-photography-sports1.jpg” and so on.

3. Target locally – If you are doing photography job in New York, the best way to promote your photography is to target in your place. This will create a scope and targeted results and your images will be seen by the right person. A person will always look for local services rather than hiring outside the town. When people search, it is always be a KEYWORD + Place. Example, “wedding photographer in new York”. We will give them what they want by simply adding the place that you want your service to reach and your filename will become “new-york-excellent-capture-photography-wedding.jpg. Just play with your keywords and put yourself as the person searching in the search engine.

4. Upload it in your favorite social media sites and photo sharing sites.

With these three simple steps in post production you can make your photos and your business sell online. You must consider the importance of SEO in arts. In the next post, I will give you some tips and tricks on how to do it (SEO) on your videos.

  1. I think that is a really good idea to brand your picture’s file names. This would definitely remove some of the traffic of people looking to use pictures from Google image search by search more broad terms.

    Thanks for the post!

Only a few people makes use of image SEO, simply because of the fact that only a few knows about alt text on images. I guess, if you really wanna make your photo arts known, applying the proper and applicable alt tags will do. And anyway, DeviantArt is such a place for photo arts.
